Joseph A. Cari, Jr. (born 8 October 1952) is a private equity investor, public policy expert, and philanthropist currently residing in New York, New York and Castellina in Chianti, Italy.

Mr. Cari is Chairman & CEO of Castellini Partners, a New York based merchant bank that has invested in technology, medical device, financial services and media companies world wide. Among those companies are: Integration Capital & Trade [1], OneMedplace [2], Healthpoint Capital Partners [3], Amana Creative [4], Paradigm Spine [5], Crescent Asset Management [6] and Medcapital Partners.

Mr. Cari is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), on the Advisory Boards of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Loyola Marymount University Institute for Leadership and the World Policy Institute. He lectures on American Foreign Policy and presidential politics at Villanova University, Lebanese American University (Beirut, Lebanon) and Loyola Marymount University

Previously, Mr. Cari served in President Clinton’s administration as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, a government funded think tank that works with various branches of the US government including the Department of State.

Philanthropically, Mr. Cari established the Rita Bahr Cari Memorial Fund at Notre Dame University's Center for Civil and Human Rights. He is also a contributor to, and sponsor of St. Anne’s Grammar School in Chicago, Il. Mr Cari is very active with the University of Notre Dame’s presence in Haiti and has traveld to Haiti concerning the reconstruction efforts [7].

Mr. Cari is a member of the Arab Bankers Association.

Biography

Family and education

Cari, an Italian American, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of Dr. Joseph and Elaine Cari, who had 3 other children: Patricia, Kathleen, & John.

Joseph Cari Sr. was a prominent physician and surgeon in Chicago who headed the Department of Family Medicine at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Cari was also an author [8] who served on the faculty of University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School, and as the Chief Medical Officer for the Chicago Fire Department. Mrs. Elaine Cari served as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mercy Hospital & Medical Center.

In 1974, Joe A. Cari Jr. graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. degree in Sociology. As an undergraduate at Notre Dame, Joe was a member of the Varsity baseball team,[9] and was president of Fisher Hall. In 1978 earned a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School.[10] Joe was admitted to practice law but was later disbarred.

In 2001, Mr Cari was awarded, and completed, a fellowship at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.[11]

Personal life

Mr. Cari married to Rita Bahr, a corporate lawyer who specialized in mergers and acquisitions for Motorola Corporation. Mr. Cari was widowed in 2002 when his wife Rita Bahr Cari died of cancer.[12] Joe Cari has one daughter, Nicole from a previous marriage.

From 1980 to 2005, Mr. Cari was an active member of the Democratic Party, and held several senior positions in the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and 5 Democratic Presidential campaigns.

Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars

In 1995, Mr. Cari was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, D.C., and later named Chairman by President Bill Clinton. As Chairman, Mr. Cari played a central role in the strategic planning of the center and recruiting the Honorable Lee H. Hamilton as CEO.

As chairman, Mr. Cari worked closely with authors & editors of books published by the Wilson Center Press, driving thought leadership in the subjects of Politics, Culture, Society and History between the years 1995 and 2002, including the following titles:

Philanthropy

When Rita Bahr Cari passed in 2003, Mr. Cari created a living memorial in her honor that underscores her compassion for the underprivileged, particularly in the Central and South American region where she spent a considerable amount of time as a child. In 2004, Joe Cari established the Rita Bahr Cari Memorial Fund at Notre Dame University’s Center for Civil and Human Rights. The fund is used to advance the Center’s mission to aid victims of human rights violations and “will enable the center to enhance its innovative and internationally renowned contributions in teaching, research, and service on behalf of human rights. Many of its graduates (a number of whom are from Central and South America) are an integral part of an international network of lawyers who, through their teaching and practice, strive to develop a global human rights culture.”[17]

Federal Plea Agreement

In 2005, after full co cooperation with the US Attorney's office in Chicago, Cari entered a plea of violating 18 U.S.C £ 1951. Cari was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine, provide 250 hours of community service and serve 3 years of probation. [18]
